Newbie question about server hard drive

Hi everyone,

This is a really basic thing, so basic that i don't know where to ask.

My small company is about to purchase a server, it's a Dell PowerEdge that have 4 server board with 2 Xeon X5650 each. Really cheap, really good deal. The thing is it doesn't have any HDD. I only have to buy 4 HDDs and done.

Now my question is, can i buy any normal HDD? Or it has to be "Server" HDD?

Most Enterprise-class HDDs have higher tolerance internal parts - designed to meet the needs of high-availability environment, 24/7. Also, higher tolerance for vibration, heat, and the other environmental factors which comes in a server environment. Enterprise HDDs also usually have higher spindle speeds (10k-15k), which's more profitable in long terms. SAS disks are optimized for high queue depth random I/O; while desktop systems are very low queue depth.

They also have lower error rate and since data integrety is highly desirable, its better to opt for enterprise grade HDDs for business solutions.

I would think you would want an Enterprise Hard Drives. Because of the Speeds and different loads they are meant to handle.
