Hi,
I am a blind computer user, who happened to discover Corewar today. The
concept intrigues me, so I am wondering how things could work. I am not
clear on what I do with the pmars program I have downloaded, nor what I do
with the warriors I create.
I am also wondering if a blind person could even play this game, which seems
to have a lot to do with text.
Thanks in Advance,
Zack

Hi Zack,
I seriously doubt there's anything about Core Wars that should
prevent a blind computer user from playing it. Having said that, it's
likely you could find unnoticed barriers. If you do, I hope you'll
(gently) point them out.
If you're new to computer programming, Core Wars might not be the
best place to start. Also, it does take a lot of effort to learn to
play it well. It's a worthy challenge.

This may or may not be helpful, since I don't know all that much about
what limitations blindness puts on computer use or how to get around
them. From what I've read, I've got the impression that text-based
command line programs are relatively easy to use. Is this correct?

If so, a blind person should certainly be able to play Core War. The
warriors can be written with any text editor, and the pMARS program
runs from the command line. pMARS does include a graphical display,
but that's not really necessary to play the game. I've never really
used it much myself.

I suppose you've already found my beginners' guide? If not, here's
the URL:

http://vyznev.net/corewar/guide.html

It doesn't really say much at all about things like running pMARS and
using the debugger, but there are other tutorials for that. It does
give a reasonably good introduction to the language used to write your
warriors (if I may say so myself).

(Also, if you find any problems with the web page, please let me know.
It's pretty simple, all in all, so I hope there won't be any, but I'll
be glad to fix them if there are some.)
