Newbie question

Hello all,

Been researching for my answer but I can't quite figure this out. I want to get a SSD for my desktop. Obviously everything is on my current hard drive. I want to know if theres a way to transfer just the OS (Win 7 - 64 bit) and a few applications (photoshop, 3DS max) to the SSD and leave the rest on the regular hard drive. Thanks everybody. My specs: ASUS P5Q SE Plus, Intel Q9400 2.6ghz, Radeon HD 4870, 4gb Corsair XMS2 memory, Cooler Master HAF 922 case, 1000 watt PSU, Corsair H50 liquid cooling, WD 320 gb 5400rpm hard drive.

Short answer: No. You don't transfer the existing OS to the SSD; conventional wisdom at this time is to do a fresh install.

Yes, it is possible to install some of your apps to the SSD and others to the regular HDD, but you will still have to re-install them, not just run the old copies off the HDD without changes. Installation makes changes to the registry and possibly files in the Windows directory; very few apps are designed to be "portable," requiring only their installation directory structure to run.

How big is your OS partition or, if your drive is not partitioned, your Windows and Program Files directory? Heck, you can buy an SSD the size of your hard drive for eight hundred bucks. What is your current budget?

Finally, unasked-for advice. Unless that WD is a Green drive you bought to keep power usage down, replace it with a larger 7200-RPM drive to improve overall performance.

Thanks for the quick reply. I had a feeling it wasn't going to be that easy. I don't plan on buying a large SSD. I'm thinking about 64gb. That's right around my budget. I will probably go ahead and upgrade to a larger 7200 RPM drive. Those are pretty cheap now. Thanks again.

Don't bother with 64GB boot drive. The SSD will fill up so fast with updates, etc it's not worth it. Been there; Done that.

120GB is the sweet spot for SSD's now. It gives you enough room for most of your applications, along with a few games.
