newbie to cutting -Vegas

I have setup a track/timeline with 5 still images to try out the tools and
methods - when I choose the normal edit tool and select an event and cut it
out of it's position e.g. the 3rd image) and paste it to another position
(e.g. at the end) there is a gap which should close or rearrange itself with
the ripple command but doesnt ?
