With a bit of time on my hands an being a construction guy, I thought to experiment with my x86 build by trying out the ubuntu os.
I downloaded to a second hdd, moved it to C:/ and installed. Rebooted, choose "Ubuntu" and pressed enter. Started to load but didn't complete with a host of error messages. (Have screen shots available) I believe that my mistake was that I didn't partition the hdd for the new os. Is that right and if so what is the safest way to create the partition since I have never partitioned a drive before.
Thanks

I took the downloaded files from D:/ and copied the files to C:/. Once I did that, I unzipped the files loaded the full installer and installed to C:/. When I reboot, I am asked which OS to boot. So I assume that the OS went on to the drive.

This is a very odd pathway to installing Ubuntu.
Generally, you boot from a DVD or USB, and install that way.

A Ubuntu download generally comes as an ISO file. You use that to create your install media, USB or DVD.
From your description, I have no idea how to 'fix', other than to start over and do it the usual way.

Maybe, but that ISO and VirtualCloneDrive should not exist on the same drive or partition you're trying to install to.
