News Newegg blames tariffs for RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 price hikes

So, technically the offical MSRP will be $1100-1200 and $2200-2300 for baseline models of 5080 and 5090 respectively for the next 12 years.

Not just tariffs but it's become common during any sort of product shortages for supply chain distributors to use that leverage to force retailers to also purchase unpopular products in order to get the ones that are in short supply. One Australian retailer apparently reported that in order to get a single 5090, they have to also buy 5x Core Ultra 9 CPUs and 5x Z890 motherboards, which they'll surely have a hard time selling as quickly as the GPUs and have to charge more for the GPUs to compensate for the additional costs.

A 10% tariff is paid by the U.S. distributor who then decides how much to increase prices to resellers how do the same for prices for their customers. A 10% tariff for an importer can increase U.S. prices at retail by 20% or more. It can also reduce supplies in Canada unless they have an importer who can bring them in from China.

Gladly I can wait for the dust to settle and computer makers to resolve any BIOS and PSU problems and for Nvidia to release new drivers. I am also waiting for motherboards that provide for a USB4 port.

Nvidia never changed the MSRP of 999, and 1999.
They likely won't touch the MSRP and the FE models will continue to be $999/$1999 through official channels. They have much more room to absorb any additional costs because they don't have to worry about overall margins like the AIBs do since the GPU margins go in their pockets no matter what. That doesn't mean anyone will be able to buy anything other than FE for those prices.

It is hard to comment on this without getting political. I have some strong opinions about what a trade war would do to the Chinese economy and whether or not slapping China with much tougher tariffs and demands is a good idea.
I like Newegg and have bought PC components there, but I would be very careful listening to any comments or analysis from that company about tariffs on Chinese goods. Of course, Newegg is not going to like tariffs on Chinese electronics or goods of any type. That has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not it is a great political and negotiating tool for the US to employ against China .

Tariffs are not the problem.
Everybody's so stupid talking about the tariffs.

10% is not $1,000 more for a 5090. I bought a GTX 1080 for nearly $1,000 back in 2018. That had nothing to do with tariffs. It had to do with high demand and less product on the shelf.
If somebody can afford $1,000 GPU then they can pay $100 more for it. Everybody needs to stop whining about tariffs.

The price of things is constantly going up still. Things will get better as time goes on but we're still feeling the effects of the last US administration.

Tariffs were in effect then too by the way.

Scalpers and shortages are the reason prices go up.

And even Microcenter will raise prices to deter scalpers. I know this for a fact. I won't disclose how I know that though.

Oh good, another lottery from Newegg. Got my 6700XT Sapphire Nitro+ for $900 back in 2021. The real bonus was having to also buy some random PSU to go with it for, I don't know, science? It's like being in a funky time warp and it's just not as fun as the movies or drugs make it out to be. Let's see what March brings to see how well all this will play out.

Esssh. Can't catch a break
