Has anyone ever gotten an open box item from Newegg, or even know's what it means? This mobo is $136 with shipping - new is $200, is it worth it?
I was planning on getting the P5Q Pro from newegg for $105 (combo deal with e8400). Which would be better?

Right...
Most likely it was a Dumb End User, but on the other hand it could be "flakey".
One of those where you cant find anything wrong with it until its really used and not just "tested".

Without going into the (otherwise interesting) definitions of 'new items' and 'open box' it doesn't matter who the retailer is....if the warranty and return conditions are substantially different with an open box item you have to ask yourself if that makes up for the small difference in price.

It is outright impossible to predict if any given motherboard will perform as expected. As in your specific configuration and set-up, let alone boot up and all the parts functioning correctly on every mobo made...new, used, open-box, refurbished, second-hand or lovingly used daily like a bangkok working girl...either the boards work when you turn them on or they don't.

Since there are no guarantees, nor predictions possible make sure you have the best return/replace/refund policy for your needs..maybe the open-box suits those needs and you can save a few bucks - it's a good mobo model.

Alright... what about a used Visiontek 4870 on eBay? There are two that might go for around $50-$70 less than new. They were used for 1-2 months.

$136 vs. $200... that'd be a tempting proposition. I honestly didn't realize that open-box prices were THAT different. I'm not sure you'd be guaranteed to get all of the accessories with an open-box... that right there might be enough to scare me away.

@geicoman (lol) that's what I was thinking too... But I wasn't going for that board to begin with, the P5Q Pro should suit my needs and I'm only paying $105 for that new... Anyway, I think I will steer clear and let someone else go for it.

Any thoughts about the GPU?

I bought a board for $42 open box shipped it was fine and still is for that matter.
But it was an $80 board that was less than 1/2 price. Would I do the same thing for a board that goes for $250? Uummm prolly not.
