[citation][nom]kelemvor4[/nom]I wonder if tomshardware will comply with the letter from D&H when they get one and delete this article, or will they do the right thing and maintain some journalistic integrity.[/citation]

Seeing as how we knew people were getting cease and desists for writing about it, wrote about it anyway and included a copy/paste of the C&D, I think you already know the answer to that. :)

It would appear that...
*Puts on sunglasses*
We have some fake Intel Core i7 processors on our hands.
YYYYYYYEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

[citation][nom]doomtomb[/nom]Newegg cannot be trusted.[/citation]
Actually, this is more the fault of D&H than it is of newegg... Newegg does not open everything they recieve and check its authenticity. That is the job of the supplier. Newegg is not at fault here. D&H is a completely different matter, however....

LOL, I think someone stole the real chips and replaced them with fakes in the warehouse. This is the most ingenious thing I've seen this month.

BTW, I wish he could use a good camera with macro lenses I can see the "processor" in detail. It looks like paper mache.

They probably only meant for them to get to china/foreign countries. Intel should sue them. Theres no reason to have fake Intel boxes like that for demos. I hope Intel sues them. Intel would only manufacture demos.

I think I disagree with that. While d&h is to blame, newegg is supposed to be a VAR (Value Added Reseller). If newegg isn't even glancing at what they ship to customers, there's a problem that could be corrected at newegg as well. I order most of my computer gear from newegg.com, and this incident will definitely be on my mind when I order a few thousand dollars worth of video cards at the end of this month (gtx 480's).

Im checking the newegg ratings on this and I see no one reporting fakes even though reportedly 300 fakes were shipped and there are plenty people on sites reporting this makes me wonder if newegg are gonna delete such posts.

The boxes look legit. No seller will OPEN the box and look inside. Have you opened one recently? They have special stickers to show it is unopened product. Newegg got screwed yet THEY are making it right for their customers. One more reason I will buy at Newegg as I have for years.

Newegg is not a VAR. They are an e-tailer. They buy in bulk from distributors and sell at discounted retail prices to consumers, no different than Walmart. A VAR would be more like Dell. They take existing components, and put them together to create an end product that they support. Or, in your case, if you're buying a bunch of video cards and then selling video upgrades to your clients (i.e. you charge them one fee and you provide the video card, installation service, driver upgrade, and possibly future support) then you would also be a VAR.

I can't believe D&H did that. It'd be one thing for some random troll to just say that, but when he has pictures and documentation, not to mention the retailers already providing RMA's, just what the heck?

@Kelemvor:

Jellico is correct. A Value Added Reseller takes pieces, puts them together, and re-sells them as a whole. General Motors is a value added re-seller: they take the collection of parts from their suppliers and put them together, adding value by removing assembly from the process of making a complete car.

Newegg does not add anything to the sale. They don't build any piece of anything they sell, they don't assemble anything that is on their website. They are the consumer-side distribution center. Otherwise known as a "Retailer." the "re" in "retailer" is to say that they are re-selling an item bought elsewhere. In the modern lexicon, "retailer" can also be used for nearly any consumer-side distribution.

I can't believe that D&H would even bother trying to issue a C&D on this issue. It totally makes them look like a bunch of asses. If anything, the fact that they are trying to hide would prompt me to discontinue or not engage in business with them. If they would step up and own up to the issue, even if it isnt them, they would come out smelling like a rose.

Accountability wins customers and respect, lack of it wins discontent and scorn. Whoever the go to guy for public relations is for them should really consider this in the future. If nothing else the law firm should have more sense than this.

You know why this incident won't be on my mind next time I order from newegg? Because newegg steps their game up and fixes problems if they do occur. They are providing RMA's for their customers, so while yes, there is an invonvenience, it isn't the end of the world.

Newegg is stepping up where D&H failed. This is all on D&H.

Actually, D&H can send out cease and desist letters all they want. As long as everyone tells the TRUTH without embellishment or personal attacks, D&H can suck rocks.

Where people get in trouble is when they start adding hyperbole or opinion to a story. If Dreadlock says, "I got a fake CPU from Newegg, here is the story and pictures. Newegg told me this: blah blah blah" And then Newegg says, "we got 300 fake cpus out of 2000 from supplier X, here is our invoice.", then D&H is SOL. No amount of cease and desist can prevent someone from repeating the truth.

I figure that this is about a $60k heist (300x$200). There is definitely enough incentive for someone to invest in some packaging, fake fans, and pull a switcheroo.

Yes, because all the people who work in the warehouse have high school educations and can tell the difference between a fake and real i7 through the 2" x 2" window into the box....

seriously...what are you thinking? They are paid to ship merchandise out as fast as possible not to be quality control.

I thought the box showed the Processor in the rear so you could match the chips number with the label to determine authenticity? I haven't handled a box in 6 months but that was my recollection, maybe its just gfx cards that do that?

I feel bad for the Egg on this one. If they opened all of their packages and inspected them before shipping them everyone would be pissed... and when something like this happens people are pissed. As long as NewEgg handles the RMAs properly, I don't see how this is really a negative mark on them.

It's pretty funny. I wouldn't laugh as much if I had to then wait for a replacement. But it's worth a few laughs.

Newegg has the best customer service of ANY company I've ever dealt with. They will do right by their customers. I wouldn't be surprised if all those 300 got a prepaid shipping label and maybe a little something else for the trouble.

I would still trust Newegg to do the right thing although it will set back your upgrade schedule which is a bummer. I am thinking someone at DH ripped them off and replaced the real ones with bogus ones.
