Budget is up to $600, any size, no less than 15.6" screen, want to use like a portable, possibly a 2-in-1 but able to run productivity appls like a desktop. Battery life isn't important. Gaming: will be happy with older games so not important. Use: email, surfing, writing, Office type appls, watch video, etc.
Storage 256GB is fine.. Want 16GB ram. Will buy from retailers like amazon, newegg, B&H, Sams Club, Costco... Plan to keep for 5 years? Don't need optical. I like Asus, Acer, possibly lenovo? Live in the U.S. Would like decent graphics, prefer a ryzen 5.

Now then, this would be fine https://www.asus.com/us/laptops/for-home/vivobook/vivobook-go-15-oled-e1504f/techspec/ except the chassis is flimsy. I know what happens with plastic laptops of old. If this just was sturdy it would fit the bill b/c they appear to have put effort into a good keyboard. I'd love usb 4 but don't know how widespread it's adoption is yet.

I've also looked at some zenbooks and a yoga 7i gen 8 if that helps. Just need an upgrade that I can use on the couch, in bed, or on desk but realize a tablet isn't going to do the job. Wondered about waiting for the newer AMD chips w/integrated (run cooler) but don't think I can wait if I can find something as good as the vivo above for that kind of money.

Much appreciate any feedback.

Cheers,

Mac

What's a "good keyboard" to you? To be frank, most laptops until you get into boutique tier are going to have okay keyboards at best, awful gooey ones at worst. If a really good keyboard is what you're after, then I'd suggest getting a separate keyboard altogether.

Well hotaru.hino, I'll have to rely on reviews online & owner remarks on sites like amazon or newegg. Can't go out and try every laptop on some list. So if I read - like I have with the Vivobook - that they engineered something new or different I take it as a sign they didn't use a cookie-cutter & I'll see what people say.

I'm considering getting a separate keyboard sometime but for this laptop I'll use casually I figure it's worth a shot looking for something better than 'average'. Not going full Thinkpad on this one.

What intrigues me is the stats on that Vivobook for that price. Not just the screen. I'm sure it'll cost more w/16GB and W11 Pro. Unfortunately 'flimsy' is a deal breaker.
