Alright I just got done with my build and everything seems fine until I try to plug a monitor in. Every component in the computer is working. But whether it be an hdmi cord to the gpu or a VGA to the motherboard the monitor will not receive picture.
My parts are
Gtx 970 g1 gaming
Asrock Pro 4 z97
Cxm 600 watt power supply
4690k
212 Evo
1tb seagate barricuda
120 gb ssd

Solution
Ok first if there is a Dedicated GPU the on board graphics on the motherboard will not work, it gets deactivated when a GPU plugged in. Make sure you plug into the GPU, try a different cable then the HDMI, the cable may be not working, check that the monitor is searching for inputs, some don't scan and need to be manually set to the correct input type. Make sure the GPU has all the 6 or 8 pin power connectors plugged in.

I have connected both the 8 pin and 6 pin connectors into the gpu from the power suppy, and I know for sure that the hdmi cord works because I just used it to play tv on the monitor before plugging it into the graphics card. I have no idea why picture is not appearing on the screen

Even if the cable is working the GPU may need drivers before it can used HDMI, it may seem odd but HDMI isn't simple like DVI or VGA, if you can try VGA or DVI.

Try what ffg7 said, pull out the GPU and check that the intergrated on the CPU is working. Check the PCIe settings in the BIOS. Try another GPU if you have one in the PC to make sure the Motherboard isn't broken. Try the GPU in another PC to check it isn't broken.

Just think to youself, what can I do to make sure X,Y,Z isn't broken and start eliminating potential problems or broken parts.
