Newly built gaming PC, but I still have low fps? please help

This is my first time building my own PC. All my friends built their own so naturally I wanted those ultra graphics and tackled the project as well.


This is my build

CPU- (i5 6600k)
CPU COOLER- (Hyper 212 EVO)
MOTHERBOARD- (MSI Z170A gaming m5)
RAM- (Kingston Hyperx Furty Black DDR4-2133)
SSD- (Crucial BX100 250 GB)
HDD- (WD Caviar BLue 1TB)
Gpu- (MSI r9 390)

OS- Windows 8.1

Everything runs quickly UNTIL I open any game-- whether it's an online one or not. It's so painstakingly laggy that I have to just turn off my computer to exit out.

I installed the drivers through the provided discs and updated from there. My temp is ~30 C currently and ~ 50 C with a game opened.

I've been researching and going through threads all day but none have helped me.

This is my first thread so I'm not sure what other information is needed, but would be more than happy to provide more if asked.

I assume you have your monitor plugged into your video card, not your motherboard, and that the windows lower settings are set to performance?

Yes, my monitor is VGA so I got a VGA to HDMI adapter and it's plugged into my graphics card. I have also set windows to high performance as well.

How much RAM is in it? You're running it on a VGA monitor? That's got to be painful..
