Hi folks,

I've just recently built a PC, and, after all that pain-staking work and research, I cannot get windows to boot from the dvd. The version is Windows 8.1 OEM (purchased by mistake).

All the components should be compatible, and I get the motherboard to post, but I cannot get the PC to boot from the DVD drive. Some times it asks if I want to boot from DVD/CD, in which case I get a blue screen from Windows and the error code 0xc0000185. Other times, it goes straight to blinking cursor.

I tried to get Microsoft to explain the code, but got no help other than it being a "piece of hardware or drivers that Windows is not compatible with." I've found some information on the internet that says it might be an I/0 error or a bad hard drive. I checked all my connections, and it can't be the hard drive since I'm trying to boot from a DVD drive.

This is my first build, and this is at the limit of my technical knowledge. Do you think it's the DVD drive? It doesn't seem likely because to be able to get the blue screen, the DVD drive must be working enough to allow at least that much of windows to load. What other components could it be?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Ok.

If you have a new board, it most likely contains two sata chipsets.
One will be based on Sata 2.0 ports and the other will be for Sata 3.0 ports.

Now depending on the board you must take note on the color of the sata ports you plugged your CD rom drive to and hard drive.

A cd drive will work with Sata 2.0 and most hard drives will run with Sata 3.0 ports.

If you hit the key to enter the bios, then where you plugged into a Sata 2.0 port or a Sata 3.0 port both sata chipsets in the bios menu must be enabled.

Sometimes the windows installation does not carry drivers to support a Sata 3.0 device or interface.
Or to get windows to install without a crash set the interface mode to Ahci mode.
The result of the crash can be because...

Or to get windows to install without a crash set the interface mode to Ahci mode.
The result of the crash can be because not all of the Sata chipsets are enabled in the bios prior to trying to install windows.

Because it looks for a hard drive. if the interface is not enabled it will error and crash during windows setup.
Because for example it is looking for a hard drive to install windows to but the interface is not enabled in the bios depending on what sata port you connected it to.

Two Sata chip sets 2.0 and 3.0.

This error The 0xc0000185 is saying it cannot find the device on the interface because it is a Sata 2.0 device or the Sata controller in the bios is not enabled or the wrong mode is setup Sata or Ahci mode.
So it may be the case that the CD drive is a 2.0 device but you have connected it to a 3.0 sata port.
