Make sure that if your PSU has an independent power button on the back of the unit that it is switched to the ON position. Also, make sure the motherboard and CPU power cables are fully inserted into the motherboard. You may have to apply a little force while wiggling them a little to fully seat them. And Merry Christmas to yourself, as well. :)

EDIT: Also, you could try turning it on by shorting out the power switch connector on the motherboard (connecting the two pins with a screwdriver). It is usually labeled as POWER SW or some such on mobo. Check the motherboard manual for location (usually in lower right corner). This will help rule out a wiring problem with the cases power button.

Lastly, make sure all standoffs on the motherboard tray are in their correct places and that the motherboard is not touching the metal of the case anywhere. That will short it out, causing it not to start and possibly damaging it. Be particular careful with having any standoffs where there are no holes on the motherboard, as that will short and possibly damage it, as well. Good luck.

mundodragon. thanks for the suggestion. i have unplugged and firmly inserted the cables and tried the psu with in both places. do you have any further suggestions?

The best way is to test all the hardware outside of the case to make sure there is no shorting. If you 'breadboard' and it still fails to boot then there is something wrong with one of the components. Are there any lights that come on when the power supply is connected to the motherboard? Do you have another power supply you could test on the motherboard or another pc to test the power supply?
