So I came home from school today and found that the new update for my Nexus 4 is now available. So I downloaded it, which took a while, and then proceeded to restart the phone and it prompted me to. It installed and now its just at the loading screen with the 4 different colored bubbles swirling around. It was like that for about 40 minutes and I finally decided that maybe I should hard reset it by holding the power button till it turned off. I turned it back on again after that and it went back to the swirling and as I am typing this it is still loading.

What should I do?

The new version of Android, uses ART runtime compiler as opposed to Dalvik. This requires a very lengthy cache compile on first boot, particularly if you have a lot of apps. At this stage you may have already done some damage to the process. I would try to google how to boot into the bootloader and try a factory reset. At this point I would upgrade to lollipop and THEN download all your apps again. If you install lollipop with not many apps installed on your phone then it should be much faster.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't try the XDA developer forum. It is a real fountain of knowledge for everything to do with Android.

How much apps? If you have too many, let it do its work for one hour. Make sure it have power (or plug it). If doesn't works, Wipe cache, dalvik cache from recovery. If you factory reset, your internal data wont be erased including pictures. If your contacts are on your SIM or Google account, they are safe too. Only User apps will be deleted.
