Hi all,

Have issues with Far Cry, the new FPS. I will be 10 to 15 mins into the
game and I'll lose sound - completely - no music, effects - nada. I can
exit the game and go back in and still no sound. I have to reboot to get
another 15mins.

When I reboot (while Win XP is closing) I get a 'crack' from the speakers -
dont know if this is related but havent noticed it any other time.

This doesnt affect other software such as media player which still pumps out
music after I've lost sound in the game.

So... obviously this is a game issue but while someone is (hopefully)
working on a patch I wondered whether anyone here had had similar issues
with this game and sound chip and knew a workaround? I'm getting tempted to
put the old audigy (1) back in.

XP2800
NF7-S 2.0
1gig PC3200
On board sound (Soundstorm)
Sapphire 9600 Pro
Win XP Pro
No O/C (on anything)

Cheers, Shaun.

SP1 & DX9a/b ?

I've no probs with XP2500 at 11x200+ using a 9500np with all the pipes
open in fact the whole DX experience [ sound & visuals ] is very fast.
There is a ' farcry1.1.exe patch ', but I have not applied it as I
have no prob.

Suspect then a drivers issue, why don't you tell us:
DX, SP, nVidia, ATi etc and we can see if we can help !

Hiya BoroLad,

As far as I'm aware everything is up to date.

DX9.0b
XP SP1 (plus all updates and patches since - except their version of the
sound drivers of course)
ATI 4.4's (same issue with previous drivers)
NVidia Sound drivers 3.13
Latest mobo drivers from NVidia
Full game and Far Cry patch 1.1 applied to no avail

Have since tried 'compatibility' mode for sound within the game and have
turned hardware acceleration right down Still cuts out after 15mins or so.
Everything else is great - good smooth visuals on mixture of very high, high
and medium settings (pretty good game too if only they'd have ironed the
bugs out)

I understand there's a later version bios now for the board but I cant
imagine this having an effect?

Thanks for looking. Shaun.

Nvidia do have version 4.31 separate audio drivers listed on their site
for download at:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_audio_4.31_win2KXP

you could give those a try and see if they help

Well your drivers seem to be ok, there are two things one is the 15
mins, why 15 - heat - O/S memory leak - PSU capacity - lack of HD /
swap space.

Are you overclocked / overvolted ?

BIOS, which are you using ?, Many O/S issues with games can be back
traced to adjusted timing issues in the BIOS with memory & video! It
is also the case that BIOS [ low O/S ] settings can have a huge impact
on Windows [ high O/S ] in general and in particular on the video
output.

Try the 'Omega's' from " omegacorner.com ", these drivers are games
and eye candy optimized, not for benchmarking. Make sure you back up
or set a restore point first - the drivers will go straight in over
the existing ones no need to un-install and set your BIOS to :-

-Init Display First = AGP
-Video BIOS shadowing = DISABLED
-Video BIOS cacheable =DISABLED
-Fastwrites = DISABLED
-Assign IRQ for VGA = ENABLED
-PCI/VGA palette snoop = DISABLED
-AGP aperture size = 128, but I've done a few 9200's that needed 64 !

-make sure you have no other video ' tweaks ' running, what do you get
now?. By the way there is an Ati dedicated newsgroup if all else
fails.

Many thanks, I'm going to start tweaking later tonight along the lines you
suggest. The 15 mins... dunno - doesnt appear to be a heat issue or
anything else I can figure (yet).

Reason for not posting to the ATI group was I thought the soundstorm experts
would be in here but I hadnt realised the sound probs might be related to
the graphics card? Might this be the case?

I'll come back to you (probably tomorrow) with the good/bad news. Many
thanks again. Shaun

Thanks Feroxy and apologies for telling lies - I went to d-load these and
they were already on the hard-drive. Went to install them and I already had
..... so... my driver version is actually 4.31 ( and I still have the prob).
Shaun.
