nforce4 vs. Via chipset

is there a big difference in performance of Motherboards using theses chipsets, i hear that via is the worst

What do you want it for? And for which platform are your talking about?
It all depends on how you define "good", they each have strengths and weaknesses.

In that case, nVidia....especially if you plan to OC!

I one time replaced a Nforce mobo with a VIA. First, the VIA didn't have all the built in stuff that the Nforce did and then it failed two days later. Haven't used a VIA board since.
