I was sure that 4.0.0 had been released today. I didn't even bother
checking rgrn - just went straight to nethack.org.

It hadn't, of course. The devteam are clearly teasing me.

This one had me go and look. *sigh*

Question: how does the DevTeam proceeds when a new version is out? Do
they just update their webpage or announce here? How can one be sure
that the second a new version is out he will be notified?

cheers

So what made you sure it had been released today? Sense a disturbance
in the net? :)

FWIW, although I have no information on the inner workings of the
DevTeam, I would stake good money that the next version, if indeed
there ever is one, will not be called 4.0.0. More like 3.4.4 or 3.5.0,
and some strange feeling tells me the latter is more likely.

Did you remember to refresh your cache???

Me too.

rgr.announce should get an announcement. Add the group to
your group list; if you're only interested in nethack,
score up articles with DevTeam AND nethack and kill the rest.

Best,

Ah, and downscore 'FAQ', of course.

Best,
Jakob

So far they have done both. Either check the webpage or this newsgroup to
see whether a new version has been released.

You know, I would think the more people pester for a new version the more
likely it'll take even longer to get it out. Be patient, it's not like any
of you are going to be ascending anytime soon!!!

Me included.

Me also, even after reading the thread, because nobody actually
specifically said that there was no 4.0.0 version. Yeah, I should
have been able to read something from the "*sigh*", but I still had
to look.

I just sort of had a feeling.

And I did some statistical analysis of release dates a while back and
worked out that March 2005 should be a big date.

And yes, I do have too much time on my hands.

And not me. But there will be people with YAAPs for the new version less
than 24 hours after release.

There's nothing quite like the joy of first hearing an Alvin & the Chipmunks
cover of Pink Floyd's "The Final Cut." "Not Now John" is especially sublime.

Do what I do. Set nethack.org as your homepage.

I wonder how many veterans who complain about the game being too easy
will take on the ultimate challenge: ascending on a newly released
version WITHOUT reading the Changelog. Easy for a 3.4.x point release,
but quite a conduct in a new 3.x.0 which has activated the Beholder and
20-zorkmid-scroll-of-instadeath code.

But that would be much less dangerous. Most people don't read
unidentified scrolls, but there's always been only one $20 scroll.

Yes, I got the joke. The original was better.

You're just being mean. If you're going to tell people about the scroll
of instadeath, don't mislead them about the price. The price is actually
chosen at random, at the start of each game, from a list of the prices
of the various other scroll types.

Or subscribe to SourceForge's NetHack file release RSS feed. You'll know
as soon as it's available for download, even before the web page is
updated.

I am highly spoiled in vanilla NH, though was unspoiled when I started
Slashem. There was no essential difference in gameplay with all the new
tough creatures. Just be as suspicious as a paranoid adventurer might be
with every unknown new game element.
