Hi, I have an Alienware M14x R2 with an NVidia Geforce GT650M. It is confirmed by NVidia to support 4k output, but when connected to my 4K TV only gives me 1080p as a maximum resolution. I cant seem to find any way to change this. My laptop has both HDMI and mini displayport. I have tried the HDMI and it does not give me any more than 1080p. Do I need a displayport cable to use 4k?

Nevermind, looks like only HDMI will work for you because there is only 1 kind of TV in the world that has built in DP 1.2. So forget about DP. Also, which cable do you have? And what do you do with the laptop -> TV? Just movies or work or something else?

I tested a couple cables. I usually use some cheap no brand ones but I also tested using the PS3 cable and some expensive Monster cables. The Monster cables are a few years old but I would think they would be able to carry 4K. I was hoping to mainly watch tv and movies, browse the internet, or do work. I don't game as much as I used to so I'm not really worried about how many hz refresh rate I'd be getting. I heard that this problem is caused by Intel 4000 graphics taking over from the dedicated card but I tried to set everything to use the graphics card and it still doesn't work. Is there any way to disable Nvidia optimus or switchable graphics to set everything to permanently run on the Gt650m?
