No amulet in the High Priest's sanctum!

I'm playing a chaotic male human barbarian in Nethack version 3.4.3 on
nethack.alt.org. I've used the candelabrum, bell, and book of the dead
to enter the High Priest's sanctum. I was wearing a ring of conflict.
The Wizard shows up as I'm hacking my way through undead. I kill him
for the second time and then make my way to the room where the object
of my quest lies, the true Amulet of Yendor. I enter the High Priest's
room... he's not there. I see a pit fiend wandering around in his
room, the altar to Moloch and a pile of stuff. The pile contains a
few spellbooks, a mace, etc, but no body, and NO AMULET.

I wander about trying to find it... not having any luck, I use my
crystal ball to search for ". Nothing. I go back up one level, use my
telepathy and try to find the priest. Nope. I wander the dungeon
aimlessly... finally the wizard re-appears and I slay him for the third
time... no, he doesn't have the amulet either.

Where could it be???

- Lost in the Dungeons of Doom, wondering if my God has played a truly
chaotic trick on his servant..

Ok, let's assume Rodney killed him. I remember Rodney popping over to
the sanctum area when he showed up - so I think you're right about
that. However, when I killed Rodney later, he didn't have the amulet.
What gives? Maybe I killed his double. I'll kill him again and see if
I'm in luck.

He wouldn't be able to level teleport if he were carrying the Amulet.

The Wizard craves one thing more than killing you, and that's
getting the Amulet. In game terms, Rodney is a covetous
monster (as is Vlad, higher liches and named demons), and hence
will attack any monster carrying the amulet, trying to kill it and
get the amulet. Hence, a possibility would be that Rodney had it
when you killed him, and you somehow overlooked it (maybe you
auto-picked it up and just didn't notice at that time?). A second,
though more remote, possibility could be that somehow the High Priest
got his hands on a c!oGL, quaffed as escape measure and hit a level
teleport trap on the level above (although I don't know if he would
try to flee at all, or if he would step onto a --known or
unknown -- level-port trap, or if this would actually level-port
him). However, if his stuff (robe, books) are there, then
Rodney should've killed him.

Best,
Jakob

Levelport doesn't work, but cursed potion of gain level does.
