No audio device installed

Good evening , i am running windows 7 home. i only have this on the system as a stop gap as my pc has been down for over 6 months while i have been doing other things. The issue im having is the audio is showing as No audio output device is installed. Now when i try to uninstal and reinstal the driver it says it is done but with no change. I have also checked the driver is correct and windows and drivermax software both tell me that it is, short of me throwing something at it i no longer have any idea what to do. Any help will be apprecaited and any questions please let me know and ill aim to answer them as quickly as possible. thanks
