In a most frusterating turn of events. This morning I booted up my computer for the first time in a couple of days; sound was outputting as normal from my Geforce GTX 560 TI to my samsung S27A750D monitor via hdmi. However when i attempted to open the playback devices to change my output default device to my Astro A40 headset, i was greeted with this message that no audio devices are installed... which isn't possible given I'm hearing sound right now and the device manager indicates they are installed.

the Volume Control Properties window also indicates they are present. Does anyone have any ideas? I have attached a snip of the windows together.

UPDATE: Adding more confusion, if I go into device manager and uninstall my audio devices, then re-install it will reappear in the sound panel... until I close that window. If I reopen the window it will disappear again. I am also missing all my recording devices.

Solution
Those HD Audio devices are being installed with your Video card driver. The easiest way to get rid of them might be to uninstall your video card drivers and reinstall them, click Custom and untick "Nvidia High Definition Audio"
If your headset is USB then you may have to install the drivers before plugging in the device.
