From a 500gb hdd windows 8.1 I make an image backup on an usb
hdd.
Then I use the backup usb hdd to install windows 8.1 on a
120gb hdd. It will not work. It says destination hdd,
which is the 120gb hdd, is too small.

On the 500gb hdd I have shrinked several partitions. All partitions
on the 500gb hdd may be put together about 70gb.

Suggestions?
Thank you.

How did you determine that only 70GB is used on your current drive?
Likely you are missing all those hidden partitions and files

If Macrium says the target drive is too small, then what you have in the 'image' is too much.
It generally does not "not work".

70gb was a bit to small. I shrinked the system partition to about 50gb using gparted live.
On the hdd there are 7 partitions, alltogether about 90gb.
380gb is unallocated.
You can watch the partitions in computer management -> disk management.
