No BIOS splash screen when booting

The title sums it up. Just built a computer (h97, r9 290, Xeon e3 1231V3). All fans spin, including GPU fan. No splash screen when booting at all using HDMI. I have no other cables compatible with the GPU to test. Do I go out and try a dvi-i cable, or is it a GPU related thing?

Does the motherboard have onboard video?

If so the bios may be set to use onboard graphics

Xeon doesn't have on board graphics, there are connecters on motherboard (h97 pro4)

Just realized that my monitor doesn't have dvi-i. Would getting an HDMI to dvi adapter work?
