I have a frankenputer that won't boot and a mystery beep code. I have the following:
HP XW4600 Workstation MB (Intel X38 chipset)
HP 442036-001 650 Watt PS
Intel Q9550 processor (on supported list for MB)
Micron Crucial CT2KIT25672AA80EA.M18FH PC2-6400 Unbuffered ECC CL5
I have tried other compatible memory and Q8200 processor. I get same beep code with no memory installed, so I thought it was memory. With 4-pin ATX MB power cable unplugged I get the expected bad PS beep code. I've tried 3 different video cards and no video card. With FD and without. With KB and without. No change. Help! I've confirmed that the power supply I have is compatible with the motherboard. Could it be a bad motherboard? The only parts I haven't changed are the MB and PS.

OK, but I've tried new memory from 2 different vendors, both of which were guaranteed to be compatible with the motherboard. I get the same results. I have also tried 3 different good video cards with the same results. When I try the link you included I get a page not found message from HP's server.

No luck. I connect power, the system powers up, power on LED lights and all fans spin for a second, then I get 2 beeps, 2-second pause, 2 beeps, 2-second pause, repeat 3 more times and stop. No display, no LED blinks, no keyboard activity. I get the same code with no video card or RAM installed. I replaced the CMOS battery just in case, but that didn't help.

According to the document at http://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-c01922472-2.pdf on page 122. 2 red blinks, 2-second pause, 2 beeps, cycled 5 times indicates a Thermal Shutdown Event. I'm looking into that one.

Hi,
I have the same problem with my xw4600 after replacing the power supply with an EVGA 750G2.
With the original power supply the sytem boots up ok.
With the new one I get the thermal shutdown error beep code sequence.
Did you have any luck solving this?

Yes, it turned out to be the power supply. I replaced the power supply with a refurbished unit from another xw4600 and the system boots fine.
