Hello

I finished my new build and powered up nothing but a steady beep. with or without video board connected, switched memory same result, checked mounting pins no extras. 8pin connected to Mobo any ideas?

Solution
It is possible to damage a mobo by putting a extra standoff in the wrong place and creating a short circuit.

One way to test equipment without that danger is called breadboarding. You take all components out of the case and mount only the bare essentials on the mobo, then place it on a secure NON-conductive surface (hence the term breadboard). So you have mobo, PSU plugged into it, video card if you have one (plus its power if needed, CPU and its cooling system, and one stick of RAM. Hook up the wires from the case on/off switch, and the cable to your monitor. Turn on this way to see if it will start up and POST to the point it finds it cannot boot with no HDD. If you get this far, cheer! and then shut down. Connect the HDD and turn on...

Check your mobo manual for mention of a safety feature for the CPU cooling fan. Some boards monitor the CPU fan speed. If they fail to see that fan running, they don't wait for the CPU to overheat before taking protective action. They just send out a long loud beep as an attention-getter, then shut down to protect the CPU.

IF your mobo has this feature, check that the CPU cooling fan IS plugged into the CPU_FAN port on your mobo, and that it's making good contact there. When you turn power on, watch that fan. If it does not turn immediately you may have a problem.

Some people choose to run that fan from a different source. For those cases, mobos that have this feature also have a spot in BIOS Setup where you can tell it to ignore the CPU fan speed and not run this protection system.

Thanks for the fast reply
I removed cpu cleaned resilverd it double checked all connections, frnt panel light comes on still no boot just the whine of the speaker. beeped without memory and video board. only letting it run till I can switch it off.
Well I have tried everything, without memory , video, all fan connections ,usb, sata, except the case speaker cpu pwr, and fan, and mobo power. no beeps and fan didn't start.

The steady beeping is a beep code. The beep code depends on the bios manufacturer. I think award bios uses steady beep for no cpu fan ???. Your MB my be ami bios (was not clear) here are some ami bios beep codes. http://radel.inet.net.nz/beep_codes.pdf Suggest you contact ASROCK support and ask them what steady beep means. Or maybe one of the beep codes (like 11 beeps Cache memory bad) had so many beeps you thought it was steady.

Ah no video plugged 8pin and 4 pin no beep, But...no signal to the monitor either, tried both video ports ,same result. when seating video board in order to screw the board to the case I have to pull the board hard to line up holes, tried other board slots same thing. Ill get it lol.

Hi I tried 2 pwr cables and it fixed it
MSI R6970-2PM2D2GD5: Radeon HD 6970 2 GB needs 8 and 4 pin cables.

but still not posting, when you pull both sticks of memory should you get error beeps? cdrom spins up, red light on frount of case for pwr lite no green for HD, this is very frustrating.

I don't understand your last post. Seems like you are saying when you connected BOTH 4- and 8-pin power cords to your video card it "fixed it". But it still won't POST. So does this mean you do get something on the monitor to see now? Like, probably, the start of the POST text displays. Actually what you usually get (often only briefly) is the POST messages from the video card itself - it has to initiate itself from its own limited on-board BIOS before it can display anything from the rest of the system. Then you get the main mobo POST process messages, usually starting with info about the BIOS manufacturer (like AMI or whomever) and a version number, followed by info on the rest of the system as it is checked by the POST process.

But you seem to indicate it does not complete the POST. Do ANY of these messages come up? How far does it get? Does it just "hang" at some point in the POST process? In general, the messages shown on the screen are what was checked and worked successfully. So, often the failure is in the NEXT step which does NOT produce a completion message.

If you remove all RAM, the system certainly will not complete POST. And yes, there should be a beep code from the BIOS that tells you it failed to find any RAM connected.

Have you gone into BIOS Setup yet? If video output is working, you should be able to do that even though the POST will not complete. Then you can look around at what devices are being detected properly. Check whether the port is Enabled for the HDD you have attached. Then check whether it is detected and shows its proper parameters. Similarly, check whether your SSD's are showing on their ports. Sometimes the SATA 6 Gb/s ports may NOT be Enabled by default and you have to change that IF you are using those ports for SSD's.

Nothing shows on the monitor. It goes to standby mode ,I get no beeps with or without ram, I'm afraid I had too many standoffs when I started the PC the first time. Will that make the mb go bad or just not post? So I should be able to get to the bios page even thou it doesn't post? The monitor goes to standby like its not connected.

If you get this far, cheer! and then shut down. Connect the HDD and turn on again - see if it finds the HDD but still cannot boot because there is no OS on it.

If it will start up that far, you know the basic components are all OK. You can proceed further, shutting down to add other components and re-starting, until you find a problem part or find that everything is working on the breadboard.

Then you shut down, disconnect stuff, and re-mount the mobo in the case. If it fails after that, you did something wrong in the mounting stage and need to fix.

Well I'll try that, but I sent the ram I had back because it wasn't on the mfrs page of compatible ram. stupid me. But shouldn't I get a beep anyway? Is there anything I can do in the meantime?

Well I sent it into NEWEGG for a RMA received a email saying user damaged cpu socket pins ? I am sending it to ASROCK RMA $40, no Idea how I damaged pins, must of I guess.
Sorry for the bother I'm learning. any ideas on how I did that? Is it possible when mounting the cooler?

Surprise!! I guess they didn't want to bother with it. so they took a screwdriver swipe across the socket pins and wanted me to take the blame NOT!!
they are replacing it after costing me $30 in shipping charges. Is there a Moral of the story there?
