Hi,

I am trying to build a NAS and am using mostly second hand parts. After much tinkering I have now got it to power up (think it was an issue with the CPU, heatsink and thermal paste).

I know the PSU and RAM are working as I have tried them in another PC with success.

At the moment the case and fans are connected to the motherboard, The CPU and heatsink are connected to the motherboard. The DVD ROM is connected to the motherboard. The RAM is inserted in the motherboard. Monitor (DVI cable) is connected to motherboard, as are the speakers. I have not put the GPU or HDD in yet.

I have tried starting the computer with Hirem Boot Disk Ubuntu Live CD but nothing is getting displayed on the monitor. I can hear the DVD spinning and it sounds like it is working as there is a variation in noise.I done this with 1 RAM stick, then tried by moving the stick to the other slot and done the same with the second stick. Should also state that no noise is coming from my speakers (but think this is normal)

My parts are:

Case: Cooler Master Elite 120 Advanced
Motherboard: GA-A75N-USB3
CPU: Athlon II X4 631 (may be 641 but don't want to remove heatsink to check again)
RAM: 2x2GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3 1333MHz
PSU: Seasonic S12II-430W
DVD: not sure

As far as I am aware, all the parts are compatible, so don't think it is a compatibility issue.

Any idea what I am doing wrong or what I can do to get a display?

p.s. I have already followed this guide: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems

Solution
you will not get anything on the monitor until it has a GPU. that CPU has no GPU on it so the on motherboard graphics are not connected to anything. you need to put the GPU in.
Update 1:

I have now connected a working HDD and working GPU to this rig but I am sill unable to get a display. Any suggestions on what to do next?

Do you think this is an issue with drivers or do you think it is faulty hardware?

I know the PSU, DVD, RAM, HDD & GPU all work as I have had them working in another machine. Unfortunately, I don't have another FM1 CPU that works or I would swap them.

Would really appreciate some expert advise as I have been trying for 3 days now to get this working.

Thanks

Update 2:
======
I changed my cable from DVI to VGA and it worked for some unknown reason. Really don't understand why but I am not complaining.

Thanks for your help
