Hey guys I just got a new graphics card and I am getting no display when it is installed. That is, while the card is inside the machine the computer won't boot, it turns on and all fans are running but nothing displays. Once I press the power button again it instantly shuts down.

When the card isn't inside the pc I can run it from intergrated graphics fine.

I have been all over the forums and have tried everything I can find. I have cleared my drivers multiple times, reset my bios and disabled integrated graphics.
Furthermore the card seems to be firmly in place. I have no other systems to test the hardware.
I don't believe it is the PSU due to the fact my old graphics card required more power than the new.

Specs
New GPU: Radeon r9 280
Old GPU: geforce gtx 590
Processor : Intel quad core i7 3.4ghz
Intel desktop motherboard
power supply: hipro 640W total
Windows 7 ultimate

You guys are my last hope.

If by that you mean is the the display cord connected to the graphics card instead of the motherboard, then yes. It's a dvi chord though not vga.

If that isn't what you meant let me know.

I dont think r9 280 has a VGA o/p. Nevermind , double check the connections and if you can check the power cable to the GPU , try a different power cable from the PSU. The PSU doesn't seems trusted either, if you can borrow some other PSU and check on that , from what i suspect , there is no power in the GPU.

Ok so I don't have another PSU to try but I tried different power connectors from the psu and no change.

Do you anything with you to check if there is power in the cable with which your connecting the GPU (A tester will do)

The only thing I have is my old video card which while installed works to an extent. When the drivers are installed it causes windows to crash after windows starting, which is why I have this new one. But while the old card is just installed without drivers I can plug the display cable in it and it works fine. Not sure if that info helps.

Only other testing option I have is the paper clip tester which I am not keen on trying.

Ok guys weeks later update.

I have got a new power supply a corsair cx750 and it still isnt working.Exact same problem. I also research into my motherboard and it has a high compatibility rating with the graphics card. The PC still powers on with fans running but no display and when I press the power button again it shuts off instantly without a shutdown which should indicate it isn't booting.

I also had the card checked out and it worked fine on another system. Not sure what else could possibly be the problem.

If I remember correctly the 280 has a button in the card, near the power pins, to change between some (magic tech) things to be detected by the BIOs or whatever. Check teh BIOS to.

Also make sure that the card is seated correctly into the PCI bay. Sometimes the "flap" at the end where the display ports are that goes at the back of the case needs to be forced into place. Even if you "think" the card is seated properly a 1 mm difference can make the card to not work.

Hey thanks for the reply, I just tried the switch you mentioned, I previously had no idea about it, but on both sides of the switch it does not work, problem is still the same.

As for whether or not the card is seated correctly, its clicked in and every time I put it in, I seat it as firmly as possibly into the slot. I have even tried holding it down during start up and such.

The only thing that way cause a problem with the seating is the fact that the card just barley fits into my case, I have to press down on it until it locks in. This is due to the fan holder been so damn long (it has 3 fans), The plastic part holding all the fans has to bend a tiny bit. So do any of you guys think that might have something to do with it?

I finally fixed it.

The solution was first, I re-updated the bios, then downloaded the newest intel chipset software for my motherboard. It works fine now, I believe it was the chipset software update that was the solution.
