Hi there, I've recently built my first gaming rig and it performs very well. I have windows 10 and don't do web browsing just go on chrome sometimes for mods on nexus. I go on steam as well. I was wondering if I should get an antivirus program and if so which method paid or free and what kind? I'd want one with no to little performance impact for gaming. Any help or tips is very much appreciated thanks!!!

Even with an antivirus you're not 100% safe. Without it you will be vulnerable to known virus which can be easily defended against.

Of course you wouldn't schedule a scan to start during the time you are using the computer, schedule it once a week when you are at work or in the middle of the night when you are asleep. Even so most antivirus have a default setting where there will be no system scan if the computer is being used.

In conclusion, I would strongly advice to run an antivirus on any PC, especially one that is connected to the internet. Anyone who suggests your computer is not at risk does not remotely know what he/she is talking about and should not be giving out advice about computer security.
i dont run any antivirus on my computers. it dosnt work well and it always bothers me. just get your pc to the point you want it and create a restore point. then if your computer ever gets slow or a malicious software you can just rebuild the computer truly solving the issue

Antivirus usually have little impact on performance since they scan only new files (and scan the whole pc on a regular bases when you schedule it to do so). It is very important to have a good antivirus running or your computer will be at risk.

I can recommend Avast antivrus (avast.com) or AVG (avg.com), they are both free and both good antivirus. Paid antivirus is not any better than free antivirus, so it is not necessary to get a paid antivirus.

If an Antivirus starts a scan while your in any game it will have a HUGE impact on performance. By default both avast and AVG are set to use 100% cpu to get the scan over with as quickly as possible. Not to mention both of those are system hogs in general. If you must get a free antivirus, go with Panda antivirus free. It's very light and non intrusive.

no anti virus is not even remotely important to a computer. your computer will not be at risk without it. and it rarly solves the issues. so unless you want a program constantly updating and nagging you about it its not worth it.

First off thanks for all the replies and I think I'm not going for an antivirus software...I'll just avoid and unknown website unless 101% positive it's okay....and would it be of any benefit to just unplug my internet for gaming?

alot of games need internet to function. so you could depending on the game. but i wouldn't worries about it.

Why would you unplug your internet lol?

Most games these days require and internet connection, unless you're playing things like solitaire.

The internet is like a playground, if you get hurt it's your fault.

I spend all my time at work and most of my free time online. Neither location has any Antivirus Software. It's just not needed. Outside of really shady porn sites, the internet is a pretty safe place in 2015.

I've used AVG Free for years and the only issue i've seen with it is that some games it sees as malware even though the games run through Steam. The two ive seen this with is Tera and Dying Light which is an easy fix anyways since they can be added to the exceptions list on AVG. I only use AVG since I do download mods for games like Skyrim/Fallout & Witcher and would rather not have someone sneak something nasty into my system. I also keep the download file for Malwarebytes in my download folder just in case.

I also set my scans for manual only and will do a scan once a month.
