I have just upgraded from a core 2 duo e8400 to a core 2 quad q8400. Ever since that, games will open and then crash. even easy games like mirrors edge crash on launch and its not a graphics card issue because these games ran perfect before the upgrade. Its not over heating and the usage is very low. What can i do to fix this?

Thanks,
Lukas

I bought it off of amazon so i think its pretty good. I'm not sure what motherboard it is, I went into AIDA64 Extreme and it just says that its a dell optiplex 780 motherboard and the psu is just a 300w dell power supply

i know that it is a lga 775 motherboard and that the cpu is lga 775 but ill use speccy anyways

Update: I did some serching and found that this cpu is compatible with my pc so im not sure what to do from there

I happened to open up cpu-z and see that it says I only have 2 cores even though its a quad core processor. I went into msconfig to change it to run all cores and it also says i only have 2 cores. What do I do? Should i restore my pc?

Chances are you need a BIOS update but as this is a Dell motherboard you going to have to hope one exists, if Dell never sold that system with your new chip there may not be a suitable BIOS. Look up your system on the Dell website and see if BIOs updates exist and what CPU's they support.

Problem number 2, crap Dell PSU's. On the sticker on the PSU what wattage or max Amps is the 12v rail? I wouldn't be surprised if its only about 150w. You have gone from a 65w cpu to a 95w so the PSU might not be good enough.

I did a BIOS update already and it didn't work. I am flexible with buying a new psu so what would be enough to power everything and cost less than $200?

Can you check the wattage on the 12v rail, please confirm my assumption first that its the usual crap PSU that Dell have used. Problem is I don't trust a Dell to use a standard size or sockets.

It wouldn't hurt to reinstall Windows just to rule a software issue.

Can you see all 4 cores in the BIOS? Do Dell list your CPU as supported?

i checked and next to 12v it says 18 amps, im not sure if thats what you were wondering but it says its quad core in bios but not in cpu z
