Question No graphics card and no video signal.

I am building a computer for the first time and have no graphics card. It's my understanding that most mb's have built in graphics that will at least provide a video signal. However, I can get a signal sometimes and other times not. I am adding a peripheral or taking something out that is not allowing video signal to work. What am I missing? Thanks.
