When my son turns on his desktop (ASUS k5130) it only displays the BIOS screen can anyone help.

Solution
Most likely just a dead drive then, go into a local PC store, ask them to test it on their system to see if it's recognizing.
If it's dead, you'll need to buy a new hard drive.
I recommend a Seagate Barracuda 2TB.

no we get the asus screen then straight into the bios screen

Noticed the time was wrong, have corrected it but still the same

Okay that's fine.
In the BIOS, you should be able to use the arrow keys and enter to navigate.
Usually, either all the way to the right of the large tabs at the top, or under miscellaneous settings, there'll be something that says 'drive boot order' or something along those lines.
Does the hard drive's name show up there, aka is it recognizing?

I ran a SeaTools for DOS scan (found through google) and it didn't detect a hard drive
