'No Internet, Secured' on WIFI, ethernet not connecting, all other devices fine!

Hi guys.

First off I'm sorry for raising an issue which has a similar title to dozens before it. I've tried my best to trawl through and try other's solutions but nothing seems to exactly match my scenario.

So I'm using my PC as normal on Thursday and all of a sudden my connections drop out. Ethernet shows the standard red cross while the wireless is showing as 'empty bars' with a white asterix. Click onto it and it says 'No Internet, Secured'.

Have ran troubleshooter on both and it says 'there may be a problem with drivers'. Removed / reinstalled / updated all and still does it. Disabled both, tried another ethernet cable. Nothing works while all other devices including another PC and laptop work fine.

In terms of what I may have done -
- I did a few things involving a Project64 emulator i.e. downloaded and installed a new version
- I also had numerous DX errors so I removed it from reg via a tutorial but it hasn't reappeared. Dxdiag still shows me with 12 and I don't think this is linked to the networking anyway is it?

Also tried to restore to points on Thursday before P64 install and an earlier one Tuesday but both fail to complete.

Hoping it's something straightforward but just need your wisdom. Thanks in advance.

It might be an issue with your drivers or the LAN/Wifi controller itself. Try installing standard Intel LAN drivers. If those don't work you might have a hardware issue. A faulty router is out of the question since your other devices work just fine.

I'd uninstall them after you've installed the new one.

Also could be that the settings saved for the network connection have changed somewhere along the road. If you haven't already, go to, "network and sharing center," left pane click, "manage wireless networks," and then right click your network, remove/delete, click ok when it asks if you are sure, then readd the connection as if it were brand new. Should have you select if its a home/work/public network etc.

Thanks guys.

I have tried forgetting and re-establishing all connections but the same results.

I have also downloaded and tried to install the latest Intel network drivers but they failed before completion stating I don't have any Intel hardware!

Current network adaptors are:
Qualcomm Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30)
NETGEAR WNDA3200 Wireless 11N Dual-Band USB Adapter

It's both connection types which are failing. Ethernet has the red cross while WIFI has 'No Internet, Secured'. Rules out it being one or the other as the issue is affecting both.

Just been on another computer and everything is working fine on there both wireless and ethernet.

Is there anything I can change / try on my router settings?

Go to cmd line and see what ipconfig states. The default gateway should be the same IP address as your router's IP. If that looks correct, ping that IP and see if you get a response from the router (ping <ipaddress here>). If the IP address and default gateway are the same this should work, if not, could be a matter of reconfiguring the default gateway to match.

Was it showing the default gateway as the same as what you have it set on the router, and are you actually receiving an IP from your router (assuming you are not using a static IP address)? If you are, then turn off any firewalls you have and see if that lets you get through, if not we can rule out the firewall blocking you.

Very odd that it's not showing the ethernet connection though given that you have t/s the drivers, connection, cables, etc.

Turned off both Avast and Windows Firewall (both on when it worked fine) and neither make a difference.

IPconfig doesn't show any IP addresses full stop. It is literally a break between router and tower while every other device works fine :/

My last suggestion would be to do a system restore to a point when this was working. :/ Otherwise I am out of ideas. This is def a chin scratcher.

Well, one other idea, log into the router and manually enter your MAC address for the computer on the router settings, maybe it will find it at that point and allow it through. Otherwise if I were in your shoes I would reset the network entirely and set it up from scratch if the sys restore doesn't work.

If you only had one adapter I would think this was hardware, but that is throwing me off, you have 2 ways of connecting and neither are working nor are they showing the same error.

I have only just seen the rest of your post (sorry).

Unfortunately I am unable to find the MAC addresses of either the network card or wireless as they do not display on ipconfig /all. Any other way of finding them?

Hi all. Just wanted to give an update.

I have good news and bad news. The good is that I managed to fix the problem with a restore. Sounds simple but I couldn't get restores to work until I fixed a really annoying issue with the WindowsApps folder. Once that was done I rolled back, lost about 10 days but had my connections again.

The bads news is a day later and they've dropped out again. This time however I know the cause - it's the recent Windows update KB4013418.

I currently have no way of rolling back as it says the update happened 10+ days ago. Not true but I can't get it to say otherwise. I also don't want to restore again as I've installed a few games since then and it will just happen again.

Any ideas what I can do? Obviously without a connection Windows can't update anyway so I'm stumped :/

Hi HB,
Im just wondering how you went on with your computer? I'm having the exact same problem with 2 of my laptops and a desktop, yet phones and tablets are working just fine.. like you, i have tried absolutely everything everything but have failed miserably,
I'm hoping you have an anwser on how to fix this problem? Please say you fo as I'm ripping my hair out lol.
Thanks
Raven

Hi Raven.

I ended up taking it to my local PC repair place. The guy kindly explained their process which involved doing everything I already had (typical). They then conceded and did an in-place upgrade to Windows 10. Everything stayed as it was it just repairs all the foundation stuff I believe. But overall that was the only possible fix and did the trick.

Cost me £30 when I could have done it myself with a USB/disc but worth it to fix the issue. Good luck with yours!
