So here is my story: I wanted to upgrade my hp computer

link: http://h20566.www2.hp.com/portal/site/hpsc/template.PAGE/public/kb/docDisplay/?sp4ts.oid=5295962&spf_p.tpst=kbDocDisplay&spf_p.prp_kbDocDisplay=wsrp-navigationalState%3DdocId%253Demr_na-c03499677-10%257CdocLocale%253D%257CcalledBy%253D&javax.portlet.begCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken&javax.portlet.endCacheTok=com.vignette.cachetoken

I ordered a new power supply (a Corsair CX430M), and a new graphics card (AMD 7790).
After I installed all of the parts, I turn on my computer: The LED light that is on the case shines, signalling that the computer is on, but there is no signal to the screen, however the GPU fans are spinning. I unplug the 7790 and run the computer without it, and everything works perfectly normal, so the only problem could be from the GPU.

When I plugged the GPU back in, I made sure that I inserted it in the PCI-e slot properly, and that the ONE (please correct me if I'm wrong) 6-pin connector from the PSU is inserted in the GPU. Still, no signal to the monitor. As of now, I have not changed any settings in the BIOS, as I was under the impression that my computer would detect the card automatically. Yes, I plugged my monitor into the correct DVI port.

This is really bothering me, as this is my first time ever modifying a PC, and I'm worried I may have accidentally broke something 🙁

Like I said before, my computer runs fine when the GPU is not inserted. Do I have to change any settings before plugging it in?

Do I have to change any settings to my BIOS, and if so, how?
Do I need to disable my onboard graphics?
Do I need to install any drivers prior to installing?

I will follow any tips given by you guys, and update until I find a solution. I am running Windows 8, if that is relevant. If I am leaving out any vital info, please ask.

Thanks!

Solution
You can install the drivers before inserting the GPU. But if you can boot with the 7790, installing drivers after installing the 7790 is the proper step.

It is just one short troubleshoot step to "no signal from the monitor", some users actually fixed the problem by doing that. Maybe you didn't discharge or ground yourself before adding the Video card resulting the static damage to your whole system, but that has a small chance to occur, but still possible.
Onboard graphics is automatically ignored if discrete gpus are there. You also need to install latest AMD Graphics Drivers to fully function the 7790.

Try these. Unplug the power cord, press the ON button for 60 seconds, then reconnect the power cord, then try to boot it. This will drain all the power in the system.

Kindly refer to this Thread (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems), this is really helpful.

So, I should install the drivers before inserting the GPU into my computer?

*EDIT: and also, what function would draining all of the power from the computer do? And should I perform that step with the card inserted or not?

I will install the drivers. And hopefully I haven't damaged anything with static energy, since my PC runs perfectly fine when the card is not plugged in.
