parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/WmcWP6

Ordered parts recently largely following logical increments excellent/outstanding tiers. I figured I could go a little cheap on the mobo, and went for the G45 instead of the G65 (foolish, I know, straying from the golden path).

So, I got everything, started doing the external build (thanks, newegg videos), and found that I can't get a mobo splash to show up on the monitor.

Steps I've taken:

1) tested monitor/cable with a laptop (it's great! what a lovely display)
2) checked all the power connections (main + CPU + two PCI-E for the GPU)
3) tried each stick of RAM individually in slot #2
4) removed the GPU from the mobo and plugged the HDMI into the mobo HDMI out.
5) cleared CMOS
6) booted with -all- memory removed to see if any visible/audible error codes were emitted (nope...)

In all of the above scenarios the behavior has been the same: some LEDs on the mobo come on, the CPU and GPU fans start spinning, but nothing shows up on screen.

My next planned steps, pending wise suggestions:

1) remove the CPU cooler and CPU, check for bent pins/out of control thermal paste
2) find a buzzer to buy, see if there are any beep error codes that might help diagnose.

After some research, it looks like there was an issue with early versions of the MSI Z97 G45 with the i5 4690k, and the solution is to update the BIOS. However, the mobo serial number indicates it was made in August of 2014, which ought to be recent enough to have the newer BIOS.

Anything else I can do before I start searching for local PC shops to take my components to for testing? This is my first build, so I don't have great intuition on how to debug further.

Solution
Is there a case speaker connected to the motherboard? If yes, try starting the board with only CPU and CPU fan installed and see if any beeps.
