Hello,
Uninstalled Nvidea GeForce 4 using Windows uninstaller then booted safe mode and ran driver sweeper to clear all residuals.
Put new Sapphire HD4650 AGP into 4x slot booted windows and installed using supplied disk. Direct X works fine but OpenGL is version 1.1 (microsoft generic software driver) only. No hardware acceleration, No useable OpenGL.
Tried installing latest hotfix from Sapphire site which worked even worse (Now the Microsoft driver didn't even work. Tried other various options... Driver Sweeper again tried Hotfix without original disk-same result. Put new install of Windows XP in other partition and installed using supplied disk. Same Result!
Contacted Sapphire using support ticket. They were absolutely no help at all. After many, many posts the only recommendation they could give is to try the card in another computer. Right. like I have a bunch of AGP Dinosaurs laying around the house!
Then installed GLView336 to test OpenGL. It gave same results that SiSoft Sandra gave before. Well what now? Any suggestions would be appreciated. (Note, telling me to buy a new computer won't do any good. I already have a new high tech computer and really don't have money to buy/build another. I'm just trying to give life to a reliable older Athlon XP machine running WinXP/Soundblaster Audio, LG 22x DVD Burner.

Thanks, F

I have had so may issues with ccc that I just opted not to use it it actually restricts what your card can do. try uninstalling ccc and try a program called trixx sapphire tweaker it will free up your card and wont restrict your systemI have recommended this to a few ppl and with good results. + with trixx you can overclock your card alot more that with ccc
example my hd 5770 has base clocks @ 850/1200 where when I oc'd it I could only run stable at 950/1333 and was getting some studdering in certain games. I uninstalled ccc installed trixx now no studdering and my card is running stable @ 1050/1490 way past what ccc would let me do and that is still with the 11.4 display driver. let me know if that helps at all..if not we can find a solution for ya

well you could try flashing your card( I dont recommend this if you dont know how to) Im not sure that the software is the problem either...sorry the only other advice besides flashing is to try it in another computer...I know you didnt want to hear that but that would see if you card is faulty or your mobo is starting to go on ya. one other thing is to uninstall the latest driver 11.5 cuz you dont need it for your old card try 9.2 or the original driver that came with the card my 5770 is not high end at all and I was having problems with the 11.5 so i went back to 11.4 have not had a problem yet. so yeah first thing is try old drivers...just because there is a new driver out there does not mean that its for every card. They put out the new drivers for the new cards then they get complaints about the bugs or what doesnt work then they put out their "hot fixes" shoty to say the least

Also, I did put a new install of WinXP into another partition and tried the hd4650 install there with the same results. No OpenGL. So, unless windows went out of its way to find nVidia's driver on another partition after driver sweeper missed it... Hmmm...

I can't find the system requirements for that game. Looking on the wiki I did fine the requirements for freespace 2.

Even running in software your CPU can't handle that?

I doubt that the card is "broken", but they probably didn't put much work into opengl. Perhaps you should return it and get an old x8xx. That was the last native AGP card from ATI. (or find an old 66/6800 from Nvidia.) I have an old x850XT (I think, it might be an x800XT.) that I never tested laying around somewhere, I'm almost tempted to trade it for your 4670...

yeah sometimes its funny that way...if this was an exact science then the answer would be simple. the card might be bad now...like I said you can read up on how to flash it, but Im kinda avid in this area and I just bricked my old 5770 so there is a risk. and now we are back to tryin it in another computer....if you dont have access to one go to your local computer store and ask them to throw it into a test machine to see if you need a new card...if it works you will need to replace your mobo

There is no comparison between Freespace 2 and Freespace Open as far as the requirements to run them! Think Shader Model 3 Minimum and High End Card. Open Source Community has been Upgrading Freespace 1 and 2 to Equal Latest Games.

do you think a old redeon1950gtx would work for him in that set up??

As I said, the x8xx was the last native card that was AGP. All cards after that (x1xxx) used a PCIe to AGP bridge chip, which causes issues sometimes. He needs to find a native card like his old NF4 as this game seems to have issues with the bridge chip.

If it requires SM3 he'd be better off with a GF6 card. The x8xx only supports SM2 while the GF6 supports SM3. Should probably avoid the GF7 as it too was a PCIe chip.

If I hadn't just added more memory and an IDE DvD drive to the computer at this point I would just return the Video Card and build or buy another computer. Too much hassle. If the Sapphire card worked properly this computer works fairly well for its age.

6xxx series AGP nVidia (64 Bit) although having shader model 3 is a less powerful card than my GeForce 4 (128 Bit).

Just to let you know how much FS2 Open can demand now, The other computer that we are running it on is an Intel I7 with an HD5750. This I consider just about right for FS2 Open!

The 6800 is much faster then your GF4. The 6200 sure would be slower, but higher GF6 cards are much faster. Sandra and GLViewer aren't games, and you've already pointed out there are issues with OpenGL and this card/drivers.

What is the system in question? They also seem to have a good support forum, I suggest contacting those who make the game and see if they can help.

In my opinion the best way to uninstall everything from an application is revo uninstaller put your old card in load your drivers and
uninstall them using revo..it will scan for any related leftover files and drivers

Reformatted hard drive this morning and installed WinXP with nothing else on computer to eliminate ALL possibility of driver conflicts. Installed Via 4in1 drivers and then video drivers from included disk. Still came out with the same problem... No hardware accelerated OpenGL! The useless Microsoft software version was still available.

Time to buy or build a new system I guess. See any great deals around?
