I have a friend who somehow managed to ruin their internet explorer. They told me that when they installed Firefox that it disappeared, uh huh. (people never screw up their computers, it, "just happens".)

They did find, and started using iexplore.exe (not a typo) in the amd64_microsoft-windows-i.etexplorer-optional_31bf3856ad364e35_9.4.8112.20606_none_0df8da9699726341 folder. I don't know how...

When I started working on it the iexplorer.exe in the program files/internet explorer folder was missing. There is no internet explorer listed in default programs and it asks if you want to make internet explorer your default browser everytime it is run. Also when you go to control panel/internet options there is no option to set your home page, and no option to reset, though they are present when running the iexplore.exe noted above to which resetting has no real effect. I copied iexplorer.exe from my computer and now I get, "The ordinal 139 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll." I have run chkdsk /r /f, I ran sfc /scannow which finds issues that it can't fix. I can't uninstall (via turn windows features on or off). Internet Explorer 10 is there and checked, but when I try to uncheck and apply I get, "An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed." If I try to reinstall, this also fails. I wanted to do a repair install, but it seems that the install type option (upgrade or custom) is being skipped because it never gives me the option. I've been searching Google for hours to no avail.

I have windows professional 64 bit sp1 installed, and the discs I have tried are the same.

Please help. I do NOT want to do a clean install if at all possible.

Thanks everyone in advance.

EDIT: I also ran Junkware Removal Tool, Malwarebytes, ADW cleaner, Spybot, combo fix, chkdsk, sfc, windows update, windows aio repair, update readiness tool, microsoft fixit.

Go into Programs and Features

Click the link that says "Turn Windows features on or off", make sure the "Internet Explorer x" checkbox is checked (it should be near the top)

EDIT: Ignore me, you've already tried what I suggested. I can't really help you, sorry.

My story was mainly for some background on what I am going through. I have given up and just want to do a repair install, but that too fails. Every avenue I try fails. I hate problems like these SO MUCH!!!

Thank you for your suggestion. Also, sorry for not making my first post very clear. I have already tried all of those options. There are no, "installed updates" for internet explorer. Turning it off fails, and so does downloading it and installing it again. What I am more interested in is being able to perform a repair install.
