No Post in new setup of 970A-DS3P FX rev2.1

Hello everyone,

I have had a very stable system for quite some time, but a short circuit in the motherboard gave me the headache. So I decided to replace the motherboard. I searched the net for possible candidates and I ended up ordering the Gigabyte 970A-DS3P FX rev2.1 which is compatible with the proccessor I already have (AMD Athlon II x4 640). I also have three DDR3 modules. All of them A-DATA 8+2+2 = 12G of total RAM. The basic stuff includes a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 5670 gpu.

The problem is that when I got the motherboard and assebled all the basic things (Cpu, ram, gpu, speaker) toghether there is no post. Neither any beeps (I installed the pc-speaker of course) nor anything shown on the monitor. I tried all the possible combinations of the three RAM modules I have, to no avail. What can be wrong?

I have "breadboarded" the motherboard and of course everything has been installed properly (I think I am adequately experienced for this), the cpu's thermal paste was renewed and generaly evertything else was perfectly funtionable (apart from the problematic motherboard I used to have).

I rewrite the component for easier reference
PSU: FSP Group AX-500A (500Watts)
CPU: AMD Athlon II x4 640 (Revision BL-C3)
GPU: Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD5670 1G
RAM: 2 x 2G DDR3 1333 , 1 x 8G DDR3 1333 (A-DATA)

1) Check the cpu to see there is any bent pin or not.
2) Is the mb used or new? If it is new, try those troubleshooting ideas http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/261145-31-perform-steps-posting-post-boot-video-problems If it is used one, contact the seller for return or refund.

Hi cin19 and thank you for your answer. The mobo is new and I have tried everything included in your second recommendation.

As far as it concerns 1) I have to admit that, indeed, there are some bent pins (but straightened back) on the cpu. But why is it still working in the old motherboard? Could you please provide me with some more insight about bent pins?

Because the short circuit killed the old MB, and that may or may not damage other components too.

So if you have other PC, then test the HD5670 to see it works or not, also the HDD, RAM, PSU. If the both PSU and GPU work fine, then plug the GPU into the Athlon II x4 640/GA-970A-DS3P, not boot device and RAM. Clear the CMOS, connect the power, then try to boot the PC without the RAM and boot device.

If the PC does the same, no post, nothing, that means either cpu or MB has problem. If the PC can boot without RAM and boot device, but it got no RAM, no boot device error, that means the CPU/MB are OK, you can add the component back one by one.

The short has not killed the previous motherboard. Everything is working correctly but with the motherboard outside the case. In fact I don't even risk shutting down the system and only use hybernation. So there are no components that have been obviously "hurt".

Unfortunately I don't have any other CPU or even DDR3 modules to check if the new motherboard is dead or not. Probably I have to get it tested in a repair shop (or whatever it is called). I was just hoping to see if there is another situation like mine so that I can reach any safe (as much as possible) conclusion.

P.S. I even tried to turn the new system on WITHOUT memory (Only PSU, CPU, GPU) to see if it is going to give any beeps. No beeps.
