No signal to DVI after extending display

There seems to be a problem with my computer not detecting my DVI correctly. I had this problem before but reformatting my SDD and reinstalling windows did the trick, until I tried to hook up my second display again. I'd rather not reinstall windows once again.

What happened after the refomat/Windows install : Everything worked fine for days, then I decided I wanted to lay down and watch a TV show using my TV hooked up to HDMI. I used windows + p to extend display to get signal on my second monitor that uses HDMI, I immediately lost signal to my main monitor(DVI). Tried to restart the computer with the HDMI unplugged to regain signal but the BIOS splash screen is massive and I lose signal after the windows logo(Login screen). I can hear the windows startup and If I plug in the HDMI it works normally(For both monitors).

What happened before the format/Windows reinstall: Monitor went no signal when simply DOWNLOADING the newest drivers- not installing. Same thing with the BIOS splash screen being huge and hdmi working fine with the same monitor.

What I THINK is happening : Something in my computer is defaulting my main monitor to HDMI no matter if it is plugged in or not.

What I have tried : Using ddu in safe mode to delete graphic card drivers and reinstall drivers (Tried numerous drivers) , changing resolutions with nvidia control panel, using display detection in nvidia control panel, enabling VGA mode, turning monitor off.. countless others..

I might be jumping to conclusions but it could be a registry issue. You can go to the registry by using Win+R then type 'regedit' then click enter. First back it up in case something gets messed up. Then navigate to HK_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers\Configuration\. All of the subfolders in there can be deleted by right clicking them and selecting 'Delete.' Then reboot.

In the Registry Editor, click on the File menu and select Export. You don't need to be in safe mode.

But before you start changing anything in the registry (always a last resort), let me confirm your current set up:

Graphics card: GTX 970
Display1: Asus VG248QE connected via GTX 970 DVI-D
Display2: ??? connected via GTX 970 HDMI

Is this correct? If so, could you please take a screen shot of the NVidia Control Panel when you're on the "Set up multiple displays" window?

This is what mine looks like:

When I have HDMI hooked on my tv it doesn't show my DVI monitor as a second display on there, just digital display if I have the screen extended. I've just been mainly using the Asus vg248qe with hdmi hooked up now. I feel like i've tried everything inside Nvidia control panel that I possibly could.

I tried deleting the configurations subfolders nothing seems to have changed. Another thing to note is it seems if I don't touch any of the ports/reboot for about 6 hours, when I reboot using DVI the BIOS splash screen won't be massive. But still no signal after it.

OK. On the left side of the control panel, if you click on the Change Resolution option, what is the resolution set to for your "digital display". I ask because it doesn't look like it's set for 1920x1080

When you have just your Asus VG248QE connected via HDMI, does it report the device correctly in NVidia Control Panel or just it just say Digital Display?

Edit: Oh! And are you shutting down your computer when making these connection changes?

Ok. Either the DVI-D input on the display is faulty or the DVI-D output of the graphics card is faulty. Since we know that the HDMI graphics card output to the HDMI display input is working, your best bet to determine which is at fault is to get a DVI-D to HDMI cable. Connect the DVI-D output of the graphics card to the HDMI input of the display. If you get an image, it's the display's DVI-D input at fault. If you do not, it's the graphic card's DVI-D output at fault.

Of course, an easier solution would be to just get a displayport cable and connect the two that way.

DVI😀 works in safe mode though, and with GPU disabled, plugged in the same port

I have ordered a displayport but i'm afraid it won't work so i'm trying to find a solution

This comment makes no sense to me. What do you mean with GPU disabled?
What is the resolution of the display when booted into safe mode?
If it's not set at 1920x1080, can you change it to that resolution? (note: if you change the resolution and loose the image, do not touch the keyboard. It will revert back after 15 seconds).

Nothing is connected to the onboard graphics, If I disable my GPU, it turns onboard graphics on, and DVI gets a signal, while the DVI is plugged INTO the gpu. Hope that makes sense.

I understand what you're saying, but it doesn't make any sense to me. If you disable the GTX 970 in device manager, you shouldn't get any display from the graphics card... unless it just disables the drivers. Unfortunately, I cannot easily test that. At this point, I'd say there's something screwy with how your graphic card's DVI output reacts to the Geforce drivers.

One last test I'd try before putting this to bed. Connect your TV to your HDMI port and your Asus display to the DVI-D port of your graphics card. Assuming you get a display on your TV and not your Asus display, open the Nvidia Control Panel once more and try changing the Asus display resolution down to 800x600.

If that doesn't work, then I would re-download the drivers from NVidia's Driver Download page one last time and perform an install (no need to uninstall the previous drivers), reboot, and try one last time.

If that doesn't work, just wait until the DisplayPort cable comes in because I'm out of ideas. 🙁

Hey got my displayport in, when I plug it in it doesn't pick it up whatsoever, no post or anything, is there something I'm not doing? I just powered off then plugged in displayport.
