no sound from my speakers

they're brand new, i've connected them properly and they're turned on but
there's no sound coming from them.. do i have to do something on the computer
to get them to work?

Shouldn't have to do anything extra. The speakers connect to the sound card
and the jack is in the correct hole? Some jacks fit "tight" and you'll hear
a "click" when fully inserted. If a separate power supply is provided, it
is plugged into a working outlet? Volume controls are not muted? Checked
speaker configuration and speaker volume control in Control Panel> Sounds
and Audio? Sorry if this is ground you've already covered but you did not
mention what you've tried so far.
