No Sound when PC hooked up to stereo

I wanted to have the sound on PC play through my 5.1 surround sound, but there is an issue. For some reason the sound worked before, but now I had to unplug everything and can't seem to get it to work. Here is my setup....

PC connected to stereo via HDMI passthrough (Blu-Ray/DVD Input) for video
PC connected to stereo via male stereo 1/8-inch plug to two male RCA plugs (Blu-Ray/DVD Input)

What's wrong here? Should I plug the HDMI directly into the TV to get the sound to work? Nothing wrong with the mobo since the sound works when the headphones are plugged in, and the cable worked before.

New problem...

I read that hooking up the PC via HDMI is much easier so I have the:

PC to Receiver via HDMI passthrough
Reciever to TV via HDMI

Now the problem is that the receiver keeps resetting itself like it is trying to find sound and the audio will play intermittently when on the PC input.
