Hi there. I have a gaming laptop with a Geforce Gtx780m and a Realtek sound card. I have recently been unable to get sound to transfer to my television/speaker system through HDMI when I have been successful in the past. I have updated my drivers and recently upgraded to windows 8.1

When I go into the Nvidia Control panel there is an option under digital audio that says: "Verify displays that will appear as audio devices in the Windows Sound settings." Under HDMI I can select my television and click apply. Then below that it says to go to Windows Sound and ensure that the TV (and by extension sound system) is the playback device. Only two appear: the default speakers on my laptop and Realtek Digital Audio which I cannot select as it says it is not plugged in. I have selected show disabled and show disconnected devices. I have updated all my drivers. The sound still insists on coming out of the speakers. Any ideas?

Had this exact issue.
Found out it wasn't any windows or hardware problem.
It was in fact the HDMI connection between the computer and TV that was faulty.
I simply plugged it into my xbox hdmi-in instead.
Try another cable but otherwise you may need to have something for it to pass though.
Hope this helps!

I just tried with a different HDMI cable but no luck. My roommate has a windows 8.1 laptop he uses and he gets it to work right away with the same cables so it's gotta be on my end.

Roommate's laptop works fine. Xbox works fine.

No options in the realtek HD audio control panel that let me switch devices.

Hi there,
Sorry for the long delay, most TV's Have Audio-IN 3.5mm Jack at the back or side. (Make sure it says Audio-IN in the manual or tv)
Then run a lead from the computers Audio jack to the audio in on the TV and you should have audio 😉
Hope this helps!

Yeah, the s/pdif works fine. I'm just frustrated the previously functional hdmi decided to crap out. Thanks for the effort though.

I have a similar issue. On my desktop, I was able to use my HDTV via HDMI as a display with sound. When I added a monitor via displayport, the only sound comes out of the monitor speakers. I think the problem is created when Windows detects the display. You are given the option to select a single display or to mirror the displays. When mirrored their is a primary display, in my case the sound is coming out of the primary display speakers only.

Check which device it is defaulting too, try this:
Go to "Control panel"
Then "Hardware and sound"
Then click "sound"
Search for either your TV's name or HDTV and select that has the "Default device"

I know how frustrating it can be and sorry I couldn't help you with your problem.
