no sounds for p5b deluxe using onboard?

Just built my first computer, e6600 2 gigs, p5b deluxe with a antec 900 case using windows vista premium

Im using onboard sound and for some reason its not working at all. In vista it says my head phones arnt plugged in and I have tried to plug them in at the back too.

It says in vista HD sound is working what ever HD sound is. I just want my head phones to work, no fancy stuff. Do I need HD head phones or will these work with the onboard sound card?

Please tell me how I can fix this, thanks.

Somewhere under the sound properties make sure you have speakers set as default and not the spdif option

where Do I find this option at in bios or windows or where?

while in vista double click your sounds icon in the taskbar and its under there somewhere
