No spin

Hello,
the maxtor external hard drive does not hum/spin/ make any noise at all.it must have died, windows keep flashing no disc dialog box.do i need to have a backup for my backup drive?

did you overvolt your drive or drop it have you tried removing the drive from the enclosure and connecting it directly to your motherboard
