I built a system with my friend, and the first time we turned on the power supply some fans started to spin, then when we hit the power button the gpu fan started to spin as well, also the fan lit up on the case.

However, there was never a signal to the monitor. We are very confused, as everything appears to be in order. Also, we are using a TV with and HDMI cord.

Is there a way to test for broken components, and does anyone know what might be wrong?

Specs:
AMD Athlon X4750K - CPU
MSI Radeon R9 270X - GPU
MSI FM2-A75MA- E35 - motherboard
8 GB Vengeance - RAM

Solution
Hmm..

1) Confirm you're plugged into the video card, not the motherboard (video outputs only work with an APU not the CPU you have).

2) Confirm the DDR3 memory is in the correct slot if you have only one stick. No issue if both are filled, though make sure they are fully seated.

3) Borrow a monitor and test with DVI to the graphics card instead (then HDMI if it works).

We did change the video inputs, and that port is working because it has been used for and Xbox up until now
