no vga signal

i have just got an graphics card from my friend, and I got an Asus monitor, I use a vga with an vga to dvi adapter because my graphics card only has dvi and hdmi inputs, my monitor does not have hdmi

when I connect the vga to my motherboard it works fine, but when I plug it in the graphics card, the pc turns on, the screen turns on, it says "vga no signal" and then goes to standby again.

my graphics card is a Asus ATI Raedeon HD5870
and my monitor is an Asus ve228tr

i have also tried to use an dvi cable and the same thing happens

OK. You said earlier that your motherboard's VGA to your display's VGA worked. Is this correct? If so, what is the model number of your motherboard and could you please specify the exact manufacturer and model number of your HD5870. AMD (formerly ATI) makes the chips. Companies like ASUS, MSI, and Sapphire install those chips are varying PCBs with different connectors.

So that means motherboard is not detecting GPU. There are two possible causes of this: slot failure on motherboard or GPU is faulty. If your motherboard has another PCIe x16 slot, move the GPU there and try again. If it works, that means the problem is caused by motherboard. If it still does not work, then you have faulty GPU.
If you don't have another slot to test, try the card in another machine.
 
It sounds like your attempting to connect your graphic card's DVI-D port to your display's VGA port. That typically results in a No Signal.

Your graphics card should have bot DVI-I (both analog and digital) and DVI-D (digital only) your monitor has a DVI-D input. Use just a normal DVI-D cable to connect the two.
