No Video..AGP Fail ??

Using a Dimension 4100 with an ATI Radeon 7000 AGP card for over 3 years no
problem. During a session yesterday the video goes black but the LCD monitor
still shows a green video indicator. Try a reboot, no video but system makes
all the right sounds as a normal bootup. Took monitor off and attached it to
a laptop, worked fine. Swapped in a new AGP card and same problem. Reset
NVRAM, same problem. Can't tell if the AGP slot failed or the power supply
for that slot failed.

Any thoughts?

if you have tried 2 cards and you get absolutely no video and that means not
even the black and white boot screen with all the bs on it, I would say the
agp slot is bad.
You could try as suggest a pci card. If you get the black and white screen
the agp slot is working.

Well, if the new AGP card is one of the newer ones which operates at 1.5v, that
would explain why it, too, does not work in the 4100. Newer AGP cards have two
notches in the edge connector, whereas the older AGP cards operating at 3.3v
have only one notch. This can be misleading, though. Some of the newer AGP
cards are dual voltage. Check the manufacturer's specs.

Try a PCI video card.

"all the right sounds as a normal bootup". if a hard disk receives power from a
power supply, it makes its usual noises to get itself ready to operate,
independent of whether or not the motherboard is even functioning. Did the
floppy diskette do its usual grinding noise of a seek operation as it usually
does when a system boots.

Could also be that the motherboard just plain croaked, too... Ben Myers

Tried a new PCI video card. No video at all but I was getting the green
light on the monitor. I now suspect the power supply is at fault. If it
fails to provide 12V to the mobo I think it would have these symptoms.

Do the drives go at startup. If they do
then the 12V line is probably fine.
However, it can't hurt to check all the power supply
lines with a meter.
