Nah, what they did is perfectly fine. Threadrippers aren't producing that much heat at stock clocks (180W is a lot, but I want to remind everyone of the FX-9590 and Skylake-X...), those coolers should be capable cooling TR.

A larger base plate is very useful however, because of the sheer size of the TR dies.

I don't get it. This is a 180 watt TDP part — more than any other enthusiast CPU on the market, but they're not offering something NH-D15 sized. Wouldn't that be the most popular model for something as expensive and high-end as a threadripper CPU?

NH-D15 AND Nh-U14S are both rated to 220W in AM3+ socket, so it's clear they can take an ThreadRipper CPU without breaking a sweat, no need to a new design (12 heatpipes...) that would cost to be certified, tested, and so on so on...

I was more focused on the actual size of the plate vs. the size of the heat spreader. Apparently many of the cooler manufacturers feel the plate is adequate, though I don't know if that always amounts to full coverage.The NH-D15 plate is pretty big on my Ryzen 7 CPU, so perhaps it actually would cover a Threadripper.
