Looks great.

Still... quite happy with the 1st gen cooler. I mean... when I can run a 30 min all core burn test and hit 89C within 1 minute and then stay there for 29 minutes that to me is the sign of an amazing cooler.

Cheers Noctua!

I love me some Noctua air cooling! I hope this cooler is available much earlier than 2nd Qtr of '24 - this year would be nice.

I also hope the height stays at or below 155mm; seems most of the decently sized ITX cases max out near there (ones that aren't sandwich-style layouts).

Hahah... yeah it's an extremely tight fit in my case... to the point where I have velcro on the glass door edges to keep it closed. Ram clearance is also tight but was expected.

Nothing I'm salty about... my first air cooler and quite happy with it.

I am not so sure if this second-generation NH-D15 introduction should be seen as a highly anticipated or qualified new design. It’s really not at all a new tech progression and especially since the Noctua crew having had ample time on hand since 2014 to do something right, much more enticing, ingenious and inventive. Not just bolting-onto old tech! Indeed the second-generation doesn't deviate much or meaningfully from Noctua's previous installments. When I bought my first 1966 Shelby GT 350, I later had a choice for a 427 SOHC over the stock 289 engine which was a tremendous leap. In a nutshell I expected a leap from Noctua after all these years.

The second-generation NH-D15 will leverage a pair of next-gen Noctua 140mm cooling fans
Huh? Wasn't the whole point of the NH-D15 that it upgraded the fans to 150 mm?

I thought that was the point of those round fans, also. I certainly bought a Noctua 150 mm fan as an upgrade to my 140 mm CPU cooler.

Noctua doesn't seem to be interested in flashy products or gimmicks. They seem to focus on quality execution, and that's why their products are the benchmark by which all others are measured.

Even today, the old NH-D15 is one of the best air coolers on the market. To meaningfully surpass that is very notable, however you want to put it.

They have put all those years into R&D for the gen 2 cooler. To make a better than the best air cooler you have to really start wringing the water out of rocks...

Is this a big enough upgrade for the 1st gen? I had to ditch my NH-D15 for my 13900K as it was getting too loud with video encoding and went with an Arctic 420 AIO setup.

I personally don't think so... but I'm also running a 7950x3D that doesn't get nearly as hot. No issues keeping it cool under all core testing as mentioned upthread... and Handbrake video encoding has been the same... super quiet operation with temps in the 70C range.

Can't beat it.

We wont know until reviews are out. I would guess it will be optimistically 15-25% more efficient at dissipating heat.
Yeah, if it gets anywhere close to 25% more efficient, that would be huge! I'm expecting at best 15-20%, which is a very respectable increase for an air cooler. Even with two additional heatpipes, that would still be a significant increase.

If it's priced the same or maybe 15-20% more as the current gen, then that is a very welcome upgrade. Now, if they price it at double, I wouldn't buy it.

If i had to guess, cost for the cooler would be around 100-130 dollars at launch. They sunk tons of money into R&D over the years for this cooler and I expect it to have very good improvements over the original NH-D15.

Yeah I'll definitely check the reviews but just don't see myself upgrading given the thermal efficiency I'm getting with the Noctua Gen 1 and Ryzen. Now if I was on a 13900k it would be a more pressing issue I'm sure. :ROFLMAO:

Interesting. I am rocking PA120 in my encoding machine (5950X), had no reason to spend almost triple on the D15 however if this new revision gets really noticeably better then I am in.

Air coolers kinda hit the wall and now it's about fighting over 1-4 degrees and dba. (maybe always was)

Feeling pressure from the new BeQuiet coolers? XD

Still dirt ugly I see, though. They really need to do something about those colors, they are frankly disgusting. Anyways, I got the Dark Rock Elite on sale the other day. That one looks really neat, looking forward to installing it.

They do have dark versions. For instance:

who cares what it looks like ? its going into a case where you may not see it again unless you need to change hardware. if the perfrmance in cooling is there, thats what matters...

Yeah, I know of the chromax, but that one is even more overpriced than the regular version... so why get this, when an equally strong offering offering costs a whopping 20€ less? Plus, was a chromax version even announced for this one?

It's actually starting to get somewhat difficult to find cases without windows, if you're picky about other things...
Sadly. I don't need nor want all that bling, but it's getting increasingly difficult to find decent cases without windows.

i can find lots of cases with no windows.. the issue i have is finding a case that has the features i want and need in a case..
even with a window, unless you put the case on top of your desk, how often do you really look inside it ? mine is on the floor, and i barely look inside it....

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

Same.

I would also like to lament that aluminum cases seem to be out of fashion. Aluminum is not only lighter weight, but also more heat conductive. All of the materials used to make case windows are not only less heat conductive than aluminum, but worse than even steel.

Why would you want your case to heat up more efficiently?!
The whole idea of air flow is to get hot air out of the case before it heats up.
The only reason for a heat conductive case would be if it were part of passive cooling...

I don't. Because the inside of the case is hotter than the outside, a more heat-conductive case provides another route for heat to escape.

More airflow -> more noise + more dust. It's therefore better to have a case that requires the least airflow for a given rate of dissipation, especially if you don't like noise or having to clean your case.
