Noise from speakers when DVD spins

For some reason when my DVD spins up a disk, I hear sort of high pitched hum that begins as soon as the disk begins to spin. It's not that loud, but it is noticable and a little annoying during quiet parts of a movie. Is it possible that something is not grounded properly? What else could cause this problem. Does anyone else have this problem?

The grounding idea sounds like you are on track. Speakers could be picking up a frequency thru your cabling. have you tried a different set of speakers? (making an assumption you can access another pair). Might try a different surge protector on your power. (The $3.95 Kmart breaker bars are known to be really noisy. I find those on a lot of corporate machines and they wonder why their PC buzzes.)

Heh. Interesting. Sounds like my car radio..

When its turned down low its got a "whistle" noise, that actually climbs in pitch as the engine revs go up. The radio or Antenna is obviously picking something up from the wiring or the alternator.
(The car is very old and so is the radio).

What kind of speakers do you have? Is their wiring anywhere near power cables or the back of your computer? Are they going through an amplifier of any kind.
Is a audio output cable connected from the sound card to the dvd? If so, try dissconnecting it.

It could be any of those things. My speaker wires run near my powers strip and into my subwoofer/main unit. I have the analog and digital audio cables running from my DVD player to my sound card and they are unshielded as are all of the power cables inside my computer. I always wondered if there was enough current running through them to create and EM field and cause induction in nearby cables. Hmm. Anyway, I thought about disconnecting the DVD cables to see what happens, but have been to lazy to crack the case open. 🙂 Do you know if those little cables serve any actual purpose? I've never wondered about that until now.

That would be my first course of action if i were you...
Get those unshielded speaker cables away from those power cables... power cables that are carrying considerable current.

I have my PC and speakers on my desk, and i made sure that the speaker cables were suspended above the floor at the back of my desk where the power cables and UPS is.

What kind of sound card do you have? My dad had this problem when he had a SB PCI128. As it turned out, when he dropped down the "CD Audio" level in volume control, the problem went away. He got sick of that card and bought a TB Santa Cruz, even though that fixed the problem. BTW, TBSC is an awesome sound card

I used to get a noise like that from a Smart n' Friendly CRW drive, but through my cordless phone...

If the Scatman can do it so can you...

I have had the same problem in the past. I have reasonable quality Sony digital speakers (originally purchased for my Sony Discman and claimed to be shielded as the discman is classified as a radio device).
I have done the following to eliminate the problem.
a) Make sure the speaker cables are clear from touching any other cables, particularly power cables & USB cables (they carry a small current)
b) Shielding the speaker cables by wrapping aluminium (aluminum for you Yankees) foil around the cables.

Hope that helps...
Cheers

poo, for your car, make sure that the radio's ground wire have a real good ground. seen that happen to lots of people, but all those were "home" installed radios not factory. :)

people tend to put the ground into the same batch of wires what's on the plug for the original radio, instead of grounding it to the body. sometimes it work, most of the time it doesn't.

O/T. Poo, ya need a noise or anti-static suppressing cannister, any auto shop sells them and were used mainly in the older cars (25+ years)like yours to stop interference from the distributor and spark plugs and leeds coming accross on the radio. I had one on a 1967 model ford placed on my distributor body and on the firewall near the wipermotors, lol, I remember the sounds of the wipers and engine coming through the radio.
Easy enough to fit really in a few minutes. Or you could throw out that original fitted radio that is irreplaceable and buy a new one then hack tha dash to pieces trying to make it fit!

as well as needed pannel beating.

but while driving i dont really listen to the radio much. And i find loud music distracting most of the time. Just listen to the news mostly and thats it.
