Hello, i want to make a gaming pc out of the hp proliant m350g6. My problem is it being very noisy, so i want to know:"How can i reduce its noise"?

Solution

Everything that you are stating you want to use it for can easily be obtained by a PC. A server in the long run will have limited options for upgrades and be more costly to keep operational.

I'd suggest you just google pros and cons of using a server as a workstation before you start putting money into it.
The main thing you need to do is to replace the fans with larger, slower fans and add more fans so they all can be slower.
Can it fit 140mm be quiet! Silent Wings or Noctua fans?

After that you can try putting DynaMat automotive sound insulation on the case panel.

Firmware. Older Gen HPs and Supermicros are well known for having very bad fan curve plans built into the BIOs. It is fixed with firmware updates.

I just had this issue for my Supermicro server at home. Basically running at 75% all the time from boot to shut down. All fixed with firmware update.

Kind of curious though. Why are you wanting to use a server for gaming?

Games can't utilize 2x CPUs, most games can't even properly utilize multi threading... so you will get nothing out of using it. Also server grade motherboards tend to have less features then a desktop motherboard. It's meant to be stable, not full packed of features.

Only real reason to go with a server as your rig is for the ECC memory which is kinda blah for gaming and raid which you can do on the desktop...

Just putting it out there.

Thank you for your responses. Why i want to build this:
-For example if someting breaks it is not going to cost much for getting it again
- Second, i can have so much ram for cheap price, which makes it future proof, for example i bought 68 gb ram for not really the pricee of 12 gb in new ram
- Third, i am a student and i do not have that much money to build a new pc with the same specs, so this option is cheaper and partly better
- Forth, i want it not only for gaming, also for rendering, programming, making 3d modells, makng video games, so it should be capable of all sorts of stuff
-Using 2x CPU for gaming should not be bad at all as i watched in some videos
- Second, who can say: i have 2x 2000 dollar cpu in my desktop
-Who can say: i have 4 time the ram of yours (for examle 16 gb ram) for a lower price than you payed

So in the end it should be a very good pc with 2x cpu which are cheaper than an i7 and are as powerful as it. Also the cpu have more cores :)

Btw. i found some interesting articles about regulating the noise of the HP, @ androbourne Do you think this would work( accoding to some reviews it worked). @androbourne which features are you talking about the motherboard does not have?

Not to put you down on your points but server grade equipment costs more then consumer grade... so when your student discount runs out, GG on full prices of server enterprise.

Also it's not really future proofing anything. 68GB of slow ram is still 68gb of slow ram. (which is overkill for gaming btw). You are better off with lower amount of ram such as 16GB at a faster speed. Which that motherboard most likely doesn't support.

And again, if you were to look at the cores being used during gaming. It not where near touches the duel cpus and for that fact even work properly. Games are developed for single cpus and they are only starting to now move into muti threading.

I ran a server as a gaming rid before. I'm a network\system engineer.

I loved the idea of it. It just doesn't work out the way you think it will. It's not meant for that purpose and you are giving up on some good features just to use a server grade mobo... and you may even run into driver issues like GPU drivers depending on the mobo.

But that's just my advise. If you have the parts go ahead and have some fun with it I guess.

@androbourne Thanks for your good advise and explanation 😀 Just to say, i did not have any student discount(this is nearly non existing in germany) which is why i bought some of my parts on ebay. I baught a Ml350 g6 today for something like 60 euro(not even as much as a good case costs ).
What i meant with future proof is that: today, 8 gb to 16 gb of ram is standard. But in future the value of ram the consumer needs will increase. So i am with the 68 gb futureproof(as you said, overkill). Also you have to know that this is my first pc i build 😀.
To the "slow ram" thing :
I played so much Wii U, that my wii u lagged a lot and i pressed a button and it did not really exept it all the time, but i still played on it and had a lot of fun. So why should i care about having 40 fps instead of 60, i do not mind if it makes fun:)
The thing with the dual cpu and the games: I have to try it out and if it is as you say (which makes sense to me ) i can still just use one of them. Good that they now start into multithreading 😀. I love the idea of it as a gaming rig too.
GPU Issues: Which do you mean? I purchased a Rx 580 8gb from Aourus(not Xtreme Edition). Will somthing bad happen to it
I have most of the parts here, so thank you so far, you told me things i did not know yet after hours of searching on the net 😀

@androbourne As i said, i want to program games, 3d models, and also just normal programs. I also want to learn video editing. You as a network/system engineer(btw. i plan on studying this 😀 ), can you tell me if the build works good for my other uses?

Yeah, we get that you have limited resources.
But those server boxes are LOUD. Period.

And pretty useless for your stated use case. Nothing in your uses speaks to "dual CPU".
The word "server" does not automatically equate to "good for all uses".
